What Am I Doing?!?! (You got this!)

In case you’ve ever wondered, “What am I doing?!?!”, I want to affirm to you right now – you are doing the Lord’s work. You are doing the most precious and important job in the world. Jesus Himself modeled children’s ministry to us by inviting the children to come to Him. Believe me, I know that teaching children can sometimes be incredibly challenging, but it can also be so rewarding in a way that feeds your very soul.

Children’s ministers, as part of the families’ Biblical community, have the unique responsibility, relationship, and freedom to influence the lives of kids by introducing them to their Creator! Their identity will be found in knowing Who created them, and that He created them for a purpose.

Teaching them that God is a Good Father, that He loves them, watches over them, and is ever present makes kids confident and courageous. Showing them how to pray and trust God will make them brave and fearless, assertive in the face of adversity, able to withstand life’s troubles.

Communicating the importance of the Bible, the power of knowing the Author, helping them to treasure and value God’s Word and hear His Voice, all of these are such a privilege that is ours as children’s ministers to cherish. Every story they hear, every verse they learn, builds a reservoir within them that the Holy Spirit draws from to remind them of what they have been taught (John 14:26) and how to experience abundant life (John 10:10).

God Himself promises that His Word will never return unfulfilled; but it will successfully accomplish everything He intended (Isaiah 55:11). In any given lesson, your teachings have a ripple effect flowing to every part of their life, and growing as it expands even to others they encounter for the rest of their lives.

If this seems that I’m overstating, I can assure you that I am not. Never underestimate the impact that simply teaching the Bible has on lives. I have heard many reports from kids praying for and with their friends at school, sharing memory verses and telling others, “this is what God said…”. They take the Great Commission and discipleship seriously.

On the other hand, if it feels overwhelming or intimidating, be encouraged that you are not doing this alone. Know that you are called right now for this purpose and God’s divine power has already given you everything you need that is necessary for this dynamic and spiritual calling. (paraphrase of 2 Peter 1:3)

What are you doing? You are instructing, educating, training, and preparing a generation to share the Gospel of the Kingdom of God with others. You are revealing to them the transforming power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). You are introducing and inviting them to the most important relationship in their life, an eternal (and very present) one with Jesus that will be life-changing. You are doing the most important work there could possibly be. You got this. Well, God’s got this, and God’s got you.
